Tetris Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any prominent awards ceremony nears, you'll find an outcry for the addition additional classifications to recognize unsung work and delight the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
