Hazlewood received clearance to link up with the Australian team for the first Ashes Test following fitness concerns, although compatriot Sean Abbott has been ruled out

Both suffered hamstring injuries playing for New South Wales versus Victoria in domestic cricket this past Wednesday

Medical examinations revealed Hazlewood (34) avoided a muscle strain. The 33-year-old Abbott, yet to debut, has a "moderate grade" injury

Skipper Pat Cummins is out of the initial match, beginning on 21 November, so the loss of a key pace option in Hazlewood could have proven a serious concern

Abbott was doubtful to feature at the Perth match, with Hazlewood set to join fellow quicks Starc and Boland forming the fast bowling unit

The captain, rehabilitating from a back injury, is thought to be likely to comeback for the second Test in Brisbane starting on 4 December

Batsman Steve Smith will lead Australia during the captain's recovery

Similar to most the Australia players, Hazlewood participated in the current round of domestic cricket building up to the historic rivalry

Until this match, he was absent from domestic first-class games with his state team since last season

He noticed discomfort in his posterior chain during the final stages of the match on Wednesday and was substituted for safety reasons

The two bowlers came out to bat during their team's second batting effort in a losing cause in a substantial margin

"There's seven days from the Test series - always err on the side of caution," said Cummins

"They needed to determine what was happening ahead of risking and potentially making anything worse"

"He seldom shows him chipper, making it encouraging to witness his smile"

"He's aware of his condition thoroughly. It seemed he felt a little bit worried (and desired professional evaluation"

The bowler collected 57 appearances representing Australia in limited-overs formats

Without Test experience Brendan Doggett is the other seamer within the team, providing cover for Starc, Boland and Hazlewood
